The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is your Spanish identification and tax number. You need it to buy a home, open a bank account and pay taxes.

Where do you apply?

  • At the Spanish consulate in your own country, by appointment.
  • In Spain at the Oficina de Extranjería or police station, with a cita previa (appointment).
  • By power of attorney: your lawyer can apply for you with a notarised power of attorney.

What do you bring?

  1. The completed EX-15 form.
  2. Your valid passport or ID card plus a copy.
  3. A reason for the application, such as a reservation or intention to buy.
  4. Proof of payment of the fee (form 790, code 012; a small amount).

How long does it take?

With an appointment in Spain you often receive the number the same day or within a few days. Through a consulate it can take a few weeks, so start early.

Living in Spain for more than three months? As an EU citizen you also register with the Registro Central de Extranjeros.

We are happy to arrange your NIE with our lawyers. See also the step-by-step buying guide.
